May is Weird West Month!
What does that mean exactly? We (various Weird West authors, including Screaming Eye Press and Weird West Fiction) thought we’d give this under-appreciated genre some love this month.
What is the Weird West?
Weird Westerns are defined a little differently depending who you ask, but generally the genre combines the Old West with other genres ranging from horror, scifi and fantasy. Think Cowboys and Aliens, Dead in the West, The Dark Tower, and many others. For example, these types of stories might feature werewolves, demons, zombies, ghosts, aliens, magic and otherworldly happenings in Old West settings or stories with Old West elements. (Read more about the genre in “What is the Weird West – An Overview”.)
Weird Westerns also offer a fascinating lens by which to explore the Old West mythology, in particular retelling and reimagining typical stories.
