Interview with John Dover

Tell us about yourself – what is something readers would be surprised to find out?
I am a professional musician as well as a writer of horror and hard-boiled detective novels.
What is it about the Weird West genre that draws you to it? What are your favorite aspects or examples of this often-underappreciated genre?
The grit and the grime of the weird west has always had a draw with my appreciation of the spaghetti western genre of movies. The genre allows me to write characters that have to rely on themselves instead of technology to solve problems. The grey areas of human psychology are front and center in this era where survival is all that matters.
What inspired you to write this story?
I was curious what would happen if vampires ran wild in the old west. On top of that, what if the vampires were not the top of the food chain.
If you were living in the Weird West, what kind of character would you be?
Either a whiskey maker or traveling musician.
Are there any other writing projects you’re working on?
I am working on the follow up to Once Upon A Fang in the West. It should be released in 2025.
What are you reading right now?
Diving into the old pulp novels of Remo Williams. Reading Acid Rock – From the Destroyer Series.
Favorite weird west movie/book/comic/etc. and why?
High Plains Drifter was my first taste of a Western ghost story. Made a real impression on a probably too young viewer.
Anything else you’d like to add about writing or the Weird West (tips, etc.)?
Little details help to draw people in. Finding ways to weave in reality to the weird keeps it relatable and allows for the reader to feel a part of the action.
